In this second installment in the series, archaeologist-mercenary Lara Croft goes after the legendary Dagger of Xian, an artifact rumored to give whoever possesses it the power of the dragon. Naturally Lara isn't the only one after the dagger. The Fiamma Nera (Italian for "Black Flame"), a cult led by the megalomaniacal Marco Bartoli, will stop at nothing to get there first.

Game play is still a combination of action and adventure, but the sequel includes quite a bit more combat and bloodshed than the original. This time there are 16 full-size levels plus two shorter levels at the end. Lara's journey takes her from the Great Wall of China to the canals of Venice, then to an offshore oil rig and a sunken shipwreck. From there journeys to the foothills of Tibet and, finally, back to the Great Wall.

Weapons

Pistols

You start with these and they have unlimited ammo. Always use on weak enemies or ones which can not get to you.

Shotgun

You also start with this. Powerful but has a slow reload time.

Auto-Pistols

More powerful than pistols with a faster out put.

Uzis

More powerful than the Auto-Pistols with a faster out put. Save your ammo for the hard to kill enemies.

Harpoon Gun

The only weapon that works underwater. It is very hard to aim. Lara fires 4 harpoons in a row and then reloads. It is usually better to climb out of the water and shoot with pistols from there.

M-16 assault rifle

Powerful long distance weapon.

Grenade Launcher

Good for hard to kill enemies save ammo until the very last levels.

Characters

Winston

Winston

Lara's well-educated butler. He's been offering his services to the Croft family since a long time before Lara was born. He's always polite to Lara and he's a good friend of hers. He is the roomer of the Croft estate. However, in the training levels of tomb raider 1, 2 and 3, he is just a short wrinkled guy that follows you with a tray of tea. He moves and makes weird sounds like sighs, making you wonder why he hasn't retired yet. In Tomb Raider 5 though, we realize that he's aware of many of Lara's secrets - he's the one to open her trophy room. He once lived with his wife in Connusie. Lara, when she was a 16-year-old teenager, stayed there with them for a while.

Brother Chan Barkhang

Brother Chan Barkhang

This monk's father bombed Gianni Bartoli's vessel. He was sent on a mission to prevent Marco Bartoli from getting the Seraph, because this would lead him to the key for the Temple of Xian, the Talion artifact, located in the Barkhang Monastery in Tibet. Unfortunately, he was beaten down by his men because he wouldn't give Bartoli the info he wanted and when Lara got to him he was dying. He thought that Lara was some sort of a goddess that had come to save him. He managed to tell Lara about the Seraph though and this information was extremely valuable to her. Then came Bartoli and started shooting at them. Lara made a harrowing escape, but the monk was killed.

Marco Bartoli

Marco Bartoli

He is the megalomaniac and crazed leader of the Italian gang Fiamma Nera. His secret hideout is located in Venice and he's after the dagger of Xian. His father was Gianni Bartoli, a well-known magician. He's a power-thirsty jerk that will stop at nothing to gain power. He didn't even hesitate to press the dagger into his heart to transform into a huge dragon. But Lara managed to avoid his flames and the battle between the two in the Temple of Xian ended up with Lara victorious.

Enemies

Tigers

These beasts are quite hard to kill but not that fast. Try to find a place out of their reach to shoot them from safety. They appear in the great wall and also the ice palace where they are white.

Small Spiders

These beasts drop silently from the ceiling and then jump after you. They are hard to kill but die with a few shots from the pistols. They appear in The Great Wall and The Temple of Xian.

Ravens

They are slow fliers who take quite a long time to kill. They appear in The Great Wall and Barkhang Monastery.

T-Rex

Two T-Rexes can be found in The Great Wall. They are quite hard to kill but it is easy to hide from them, just remember they can't fit in small spaces.

Dogs

These are fast but die quite quickly. Be careful when they appear in groups. They first appear in Venice and continue to appear until the end of Diving Area.

Cultists (with guns)

These are members of Bartoli's Fiamma Nera Cult. They are quite hard to kill and often do you damage. Their aim is as good as Lara's. They first appear in Venice and continue to appear until the end of the Opera House.

Thugs

The thugs do not have guns just bars to whack you with. The best strategy is to keep out of their reach, be careful they can climb after you. They first appear in Venice and continue to appear until the end of The Opera House. They then appear dressed differently with longer bars from Offshore Rig until the end of The Deck.

Rats

They are small and hard to hit. Try to keep them away from Lara's ankles. They first appear in Venice and continue to appear until the end of Opera House.

Colt (with massive guns)

He appears at the end of the Opera House. He takes along time to kill and his guns do a lot of damage. Luckily he appears near the end of the level. You can enter this room without landing on the floor and so you can shoot him from above.

Crewmen (with guns)

Similar to the cultists but have more powerful fire power. First appear on the Offshore Rig and continue to appear until the end of the Deck.

Crewmen (with shotguns)

They are very hard to kill and almost always do damage. They first appear in Offshore Rig and continue to appear until the end of the Deck.

Scuba Divers

These enemies are most harmful when you are under water. If they are swimming after you, Zigzagging while swimming will help you avoid their harpoons. Your best bet is to climb out and shoot them from the shore, be careful because they can still hit you from under the water or from the surface. They first appear in Offshore Rig and continue to appear until the end of The Deck.

Flame Throwers

These men are shooting flame but are not as bad as they look. Their flames do not travel very far, so to keep Lara from setting on fire keep away from them. They first appear in Diving Area and continue to appear until the end of The Deck.

Sharks

These beasts are not very fast swimmers so your best bet is to keep out of their reach. Their bite dose a lot of damage. They first appear in 40 Fathoms and continue to appear until the end of The Deck.

Barracudas

Are smaller than sharks and also do less damage, but are very persistent and faster. They first appear in 40 Fathoms and continue to appear until the end of The Deck.

Eels

There is a large group of these in the Wreck of the Maria Doria and one large one in Living Quarters. They lunge out at you from caves but do not follow you; their reach is longer than you think.

Hawks

These are similar to Ravens but are harder to kill. They appear in Tibetan Foothills.

Mercenaries (with shotguns)

Similar to the Crewmen with shotguns but take longer to kill. They first appear in Tibetan Foothills and continue to appear until the end of Catacombs of the Talion.

Snow Leopards

These beasts are faster than tigers but also smaller. They are more dangerous because they often occur in packs. They first appear in Tibetan Foothills and continue to appear until the end of Catacombs of the Talion.

Snowmobilers

These guys are driving Snowmobiles with powerful guns. Try to find a place where it is hard for them to run you over. It takes quite along time to kill them. They appear in Tibetan Foothills.

Monks

The Monks live in the Barkhang Monastery. If you do not shoot any of them they will not attack you, they will also kill your enemies. If you do get on the wrong side of them try to keep out of their reach which is longer than you would expect.

Yeti

These beast take quite a long time kill and will climb after you. They appear in Catacombs of the Talion and Ice Palace.

Catfish

These vicious beasts are big and fast, but are easy to kill with pistols from out of the water. They appear in Catacombs of the Talion and Ice Palace.

Guardian of the Talion

This large beast can be found at the end of the Ice Palace. It is actually very slow and there are some places where it can't get you, just be careful not to fall down the large ditches along the sides.

Carp

You come across these ferocious creatures in the Temple of Xian. Climb out of the water and shoot them with pistols from the shore.

Giant Spiders

Massive versions of the smaller spiders. Try to keep away from them, may be a problem if you are afraid of spiders. They appear in the Temple of Xian.

Xian Swordsmen

They appear in the Floating Islands level. They float slowly around on clouds and then land and chase after you. Their swords do a lot of damage. Shoot them while they are floating and they should be dead before they land.

Xian Spearmen

They appear as green statues which come to life. They are armed with 2 very long spears. They take a long time to kill. They appear in the Floating Islands level and The Dragons Lair.

Cult Priests

They are hard to kill and often appear in groups. They throw daggers but it is easy to side flip to avoid the daggers. They appear in the Floating Islands level and the Dragon's Lair.

Dragon

This Dragon is Marco Bartoli transformed. It appears in the Dragon's Lair. It can breathe fire and is very hard to kill. I recommend using the Grenade Launcher or Uzis. Once he is down run up to him and remove the dagger from his chest, then run out before the roof collapses.
